A2Z – The importance of stucco and painting your house

What is stucco?

Stucco is a construction material made of aggregates, a binder, and water, applied wet and hardens to a very dense solid. It is used as a decorative coating for walls and ceilings, exterior walls, and as a sculptural and artistic material in architecture. Stucco is ideal for a modern home finish as contractors can create stucco in a variety of different textures, producing the look you want to achieve. These styles include; course, pebbled, raked, smooth and swirled. Once it’s then dry, it can be painted any colour you wish.

Benefits of using Stucco

Stucco not only makes the exterior of the home look crisp and clean, but it also provides a lot of benefits to the homeowner.

⦁ Durable – A very durable material as it can last up to 50 years with little to no maintenance, it expands and contracts with the weather, reducing the risk of cracking or falling apart under the pressure of the changing seasons, and once made waterproof, it will also be resistant to mildew, mould, and rot

⦁ Minimal maintenance – Does not need to be repeatedly painted, reinstalled, replaced or regularly cleaned

⦁ Increased home value – Stucco is energy efficient, fire resistant, low maintenance, rot resistant, sound dampening and adds great curb appeal t

⦁ Fast installation- The installation of stucco, including drying time, only takes about two days to complete

⦁ Versatile material – it can be applied to many materials including wood and concrete masonry

The importance of painting Stucco

The recommended paint for stucco is called elastomeric paint as it goes on much thicker than ordinary acrylic or latex paint. The thicker paint is needed to penetrate the stucco texture more effectively and has greater flexibility to fill in small cracks. Elastomeric paints repel water which helps to prevent moisture intrusion, keeping mould and mildew at bay. Stucco can be painted using a roller or with an airless sprayer – brushes are not recommended.  A roller works well for small jobs while a sprayer is used for larger projects. Stucco will require at least two coats due to its high level of absorption and to conceal cracks.

Advantages of painting Stucco

⦁ Seals out moistures

⦁ Fills hairline cracks

⦁ Resists UV rays

⦁ Good insulator
